What is NFPA 70?
The National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, updated for 2017, contains the latest industry standards for safe electrical design, installation, and inspection to protect individuals and property from electrical hazards. NFPA 70 has been adopted by region, nationwide, as part of the National Fire Code series which is published by the private electrical trade association known as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
What does NFPA 70 address?
The NEC demonstrates the proper installation of electrical conductors, equipment, and raceways; signaling and communications conductors, equipment, and raceways; and optical fiber cables and raceways in commercial, residential, and industrial buildings and structures. Strict code adherence is required to ensure inspection compliance and uphold safety standards industry-wide.
The 2017 edition of the NFPA 70 Code presents the latest comprehensive regulations for the electrical contracting industry. These updates include: electrical wiring, overcurrent protection, grounding, and installation of equipment. Major additions reflect continued growth in renewable power technologies. Other NEC revisions protect consumers and workers from safety hazards. The manual enables electrical professionals to work with the latest requirements governing public and private buildings, homes, and structures; outdoor yards and lots; utility equipment; installations that connect to the power grid; and consumer-owned power generation systems and equipment.
